Taras Bulba makes 238.7 million rubles in its opening weekend

Vladimir Bortko’s historical blockbuster Taras Bulba had a successful opening. Russian box office returns for April 2-5 totaled 215.7 million rubles, and in Ukraine the film took 23 million rubles. In just four days, 1.5 million people went to see this epic motion picture.

Analysis of the film’s audience has shown an important trend. The significance of the subject matter, the grand scale of the production, and the mastery of the director and the actors attracted not only the young, but also brought a more mature audience into the theatres.

Taras Bulba is based on the story by Nikolai Gogol of the same name. Vladimir Bortko wrote the screenplay and directed, Dmitri Mass was the cinematographer, and the actors include Bogdan Stupka (Taras Bulba), Vladimir Vdovichenkov (Ostap), Igor Petrenko (Andri), Magdalena Meltsazh (Elzhbeta), Ada Rogovtseva (Bulba’s wife), Boris Khmelnitsky (Borodaty), Yuri Belyaev (Koshevoi Kirdyaga), Pyotr Zaichenko (Metelitsa), Mikhail Boyarsky (Mosi Shilo), Lyubomiras Lautsyavichyus (commander of Mazovetsky), and Sergei Dreiden (Yankel).
The film was produced by Ark-film for Rossiya television station and Central Partnership.
The general producers were Anton Zlatopolsky, Ruben Dishdishyan, and Sergei Shumakov.
