VKMP President Yuri Kostin wins Media Manager of Russia 2010 prize

09.07.2010

President of Prof-Media broadcasting corporation (VKMP) Yuri Kostin has won a national prize in the media business, Media Manager of Russia – 2010. Yuri Kostin received his statuette and certificate in the Radio category in Electronic Media, for the organization, planning, and implementation of Avtoradio’s eighth international music festival “80s Disco” and the advertising campaign.

“Although the Media Manager of Russia prize is usually awarded to a specific individual, in this case I think the award is really for the whole Prof-Media broadcasting corporation team. I can’t fail to mention that the ‘80s Disco’ festival was thought up by Alexander Varin (head of the editorial staff and first president of VKMP, who died unexpectedly on December 2, 2009). We will treasure this statuette of soaring seagulls, as a tribute to him as well. I am absolutely sure that there’s never been a similar project on the market and simply won’t be in the near future, not on the level of organization, and not on the resources – creative, emotional, and physical – that were invested in its success,” said VKMP president Yuri Kostin.

The eighth “80s Disco” took place at the Olympisky Sports Complex on November 27, 2009 in front of a full house – more than 25,000 spectators, an exclusive roster of participants, a super-modern stage, fashionable lighting, dozens of plasma screens, first class sound and original special effects – all of which created an indescribable party atmosphere! Foreign and home-grown musical stars from the 80s took part in the festival, including Laid Back, Umberto Tozzi, Taco, the Gibson Brothers, Marina Fiordaliso, Dieter Bohlen, Bad Boys Blue, Murray head, Opus, Santa Esmeralda, and the legendary Alain Delon who performed a duet with the singer Stella Gianni. A fantastic show was put on by Vycheslav Dobrynin, Vladimir Markin, Yuri Loza, Chris Kelmy, Yuri Shatunov, Oleg Gasmanov, and many other 80s idols. One of the godfathers of Russian rock and roll was a special guest at “80s Disco 2009” – the legendary Konstantin Nikolsky.
Service and subdivisions of all VKMP radio stations helped to promote the festival. The festival was shot for television under orders for Avtoradio, and the television version was broadcast on Channel One at New Year’s night.

Avtoradio rounded off 2009 as a market leader (in the top three players according to TNS data), in part thanks to “80s Disco”.
Yuri Kostin has already won the Media Manager of Russia prize twice before – in 2006 as a Pioneer of commercial radio broadcasting of Russia, and in 2008 in the special category of Media Author, and this year was acknowledged as the best media manager in the radio industry.
“Yuri Kostin is a real professional who has truly done a great deal for radio. And not just for radio. He is a wonderful writer, gifted, talented, and kind. We have survived a great tragedy, when we lost Alexander Varin. And I know that Yura is the sort of person who will not drop the standard raised by Alexander Varin, and will lead the entire Prof-Media broadcasting corporation. I wish him success and am very glad that this year he was recognized as the best media manager. This year was truly difficult, and Yuri Kostin has earned this award,” said president of the National Association of Television and Radio Broadcasters (NAT) Eduard Sagalaev.

The awards ceremony for the winners of the 10th anniversary Media Manager of Russia 2010 prize took place 8 July in Moscow.
Heads of television channels, radio stations, publishing houses, advertising, and PR companies gathered together on that day at the elite restaurant Tutto Bene to honour the best of the best representatives in their fields. Russian minister for mass communications Igor Shchegolev, deputy chairman of the Duma committee for CIS matters and ties with compatriots Alexander Lebedev, NAT president Eduard Sagalaev, president of the ProfMedia holding Raphael Akopov, general director of Channel One Konstantin Ernst, the writer Sergei Minaev, Nikolai Svanidze, Andrei Malakhov, Leonid Parfyonov, Leonid Yarmolnik, Kseniya Sobchak, Anton Sikharulidze, Renata Litvinova, Konstantin Khabensky, Anastasiya Volochkova, Andrei Makarevich, Zhanna Friske, Tina Kandelaki, Dmitri Dyuzhev, and many other celebrities were invited to the awards ceremony.

In accordance with the decision by the board of trustees, the awards ceremony awarded Media Manager of Russia 2010 prizes to the ten best media managers out of all the winners from the past ten years.
The medals “Manager of the Decade”, made similarly to the medals from the Vancouver Olympics, were awarded first.

Guests at the Media Manager of Russia 2010 event also paid tribute to the memory of winners from previous years who have passed away before their time, including amongst them the first president of ProfMedia Broadcasting Corporation, Alexander Varin. He won this prestigious professional prize three times, and in 2008 was awarded the highest honour – the Grand Prize – for his achievements in the radio business and his consistent annual launch of new, profitable projects.
